If I Were a Wrestling Coach...

If I were a wrestling coach, I would hang this poster where every wrestler in the room could see it.

And at some point during the season, I would stop practice, point to it, and say:

That's one of the strange things about coaching.

Sometimes I believe in you before you've given me any reason to.

Not because I know you'll become a champion.

I don't.

But because I've been around this sport long enough to know what can happen when someone decides to find out how good they can become.

So when I'm hard on you...

when I ask for another takedown...

another sprint...

another minute...

when I tell you that wasn't good enough and make you do it again...

understand something.

I'm not always coaching the wrestler standing in front of me.

Sometimes...

I'm coaching the wrestler I believe is coming.

And there may be days when you can't see him yet.

That's okay.

I can.

Until one day...

you will too.”
