If I Were a Wrestling Coach...

If I were a wrestling coach, I would hang this poster where every wrestler in the room could see it.

And at some point during the season, I would stop practice, point to it, and say:

Take a good look at that wrestler.
He's not winning.
He's not standing on top of a podium.
Nobody's raising his hand.
He's on the mat.
And I want you to remember that.

This is where champions are made.
Every one of you is going to end up down there sometime.

You just have to get up.
Put your hand on the mat.

And start pushing.
Because getting knocked down isn't what defines you.
What you do next does.
And if you get knocked down again?
Get up again.
And again.
And again.
Until getting back up becomes so much a part of who you are that quitting doesn't even occur to you.
That's what I want wrestling to give you.
Not an undefeated season.
Not a wall full of medals.
Something better.
I want you to leave this room knowing that no matter what life puts on top of you...
you know how to get back up.
Fall down seven times.
Stand up eight.”
