THE OBSTACLE IS THE TRAINING

If I were a wrestling coach, I would hang this poster where every wrestler on my team would see it every day.

Because eventually every wrestler asks the same question:

Why does this have to be so hard?

The practice that breaks you down.

The opponent you hoped wouldn't be in your bracket.

The loss you can't stop thinking about.

The exhaustion.

The disappointment.

The days when improvement seems impossibly far away.

And I would tell my wrestlers:

Those things aren't getting in the way of your development.

They ARE your development.

Marcus Aurelius understood something nearly two thousand years ago that every wrestler eventually discovers.

You don't build strength of character by avoiding difficulty.

You build it by meeting difficulty.

Again.

And again.

And again.

That's one of the reasons wrestling is such an extraordinary teacher.

Every hard practice asks you to continue when quitting would be easier.

Every loss asks you to return.

Every difficult opponent asks you to become better than you were yesterday.

Every disappointment asks you what you're going to do next.

And somewhere in all of that struggle, something much more important than a wrestling record is being built.

The wrestler is being built.

That's what I would want my athletes to understand when they looked at this poster.

I wouldn't want them to see hardship as evidence that something has gone wrong.

I'd want them to recognize it as part of the process.

Because the wrestler who learns to face difficulty instead of avoiding it is learning something he will need long after his final match.

Someday there won't be another practice.

There won't be another weigh-in.

There won't be another opponent standing across the circle.

There won't even be another wrestling mat.

But there will still be obstacles.

Failure.

Pressure.

Responsibility.

Disappointment.

Fear.

Moments when life doesn't go according to plan.

And when those moments arrive, I would want one of my former wrestlers to recognize them.

Not because life is easy.

But because wrestling taught him what to do when it isn't.

Every challenge you overcome is building the person you'll need to become.

That's why this poster belongs in a wrestling room.

Not simply because it motivates a wrestler to practice harder.

But because it helps him understand why the hard part matters.

And twenty years from now, when the wrestling room is only a memory, maybe he'll finally understand what his coach was trying to teach him.
