If I Were a Wrestling Coach...
If I were a wrestling coach, I would hang this poster where every wrestler in the room could see it.
And at some point during the season, I would stop practice, point to it, and say:
It isn't the trophy.
In fact, I almost wish you couldn't see the trophy at all.
Because that's not what this picture is about.
Look at the wrestler.
Look at his eyes.
At this moment, there is no trophy.
There’s no crowd.
There’s no girlfriend in the stands.
There’s no college recruiter watching.
There isn't even a scoreboard.
There’s only one thing in front of him.
His opponent.
That's what it means to be locked in.
And it's one of the hardest things I will ever try to teach you.
Because everybody wants to win.
Everybody wants the medal.
Everybody wants to stand on top of the podium.
But championships aren't won by staring at the trophy.
They're won by taking care of what's directly in front of you.
One position.
One takedown.
One escape.
One ride.
One second.
At a time.
Your opponent scores?
Forget it….Next position.
You miss a takedown?
Forget it….Next position.
The referee makes a call you don't like?
Forget it….Next position.
You're down by two with thirty seconds left?
Then you have thirty seconds to wrestle.
Nothing else matters.
That's being locked in.
And I'll tell you something else.
This lesson is going to matter long after wrestling.
Because life is going to put a lot of trophies in the distance.
Things you want.
Things you dream about.
Things that seem impossibly far away.
And you're going to be tempted to stare at them.
Don't.
Look at what's in front of you.
Do today's work.
Solve today's problem.
Win today's position.
Then wake up tomorrow and do it again.
That's how wrestlers become champions.
And it's how people accomplish almost anything worthwhile.
So when you look at this poster, don't look at the trophy.
Look at his eyes.
Because the wrestler who spends all his time thinking about the trophy...
usually isn't the one who gets it.
The wrestler who becomes completely consumed with the next position...
often does.
So when that whistle blows...
the crowd disappears.
The scoreboard disappears.
The trophy disappears.
Yesterday disappears.
Tomorrow disappears.
There's only you.
Your opponent.
And the position in front of you.
LOCKED IN.
