If I Were a Wrestling Coach

If I were a wrestling coach, I would have this poster hanging on the wall of my wrestling room.

And at the beginning of every season, I would gather my wrestlers around it and tell them this:

One day, that will be you.

One day you will be standing in the circle for the last time.

The clock will read 0:00.

The referee will walk away. Your opponent will walk off the mat. The crowd will begin to leave.

And for the first time in years, there won't be another practice tomorrow. There won't be another wrestle-off next week. There won't be another tournament next Saturday.

Your wrestling career will be over.

You probably won't know exactly when that day is coming.

That's what makes it important.

So I want you to look at this poster and ask yourself a question:

When I'm the wrestler standing there, what do I want to be able to say to myself?

I hope you can say:

I gave this everything I had.

I hope you can say you showed up on the mornings when you didn't feel like showing up.

That you finished the drills when you were exhausted.

That you listened when your coaches tried to teach you.

That you were a good teammate.

That you respected the people who helped you get there.

That when things got difficult, you didn't look for an excuse or an easy way out.

That when you lost, you came back.

That when you won, you stayed humble.

And most of all, that you never wasted the opportunity wrestling gave you to discover what you were capable of becoming.

Because here's something I can promise you:

You will not remember every match.

The wins and losses that seem so important today will eventually blur together. The medals will end up in a box. The brackets will disappear. Even some of the biggest victories will become distant memories.

But the person wrestling helped you become?

You get to keep him.

The discipline.

The toughness.

The courage.

The ability to get knocked down and stand back up.

The knowledge that when something becomes difficult, you don't quit.

Those things can stay with you for the rest of your life.

So while you still have matches left, don't wrestle only for the scoreboard.

Wrestle so that someday, when the clock finally reaches 0:00 and you're standing in that circle for the last time, you can look back at everything wrestling gave you—and everything you gave back—and say:

I didn't waste it.

I became everything this sport gave me the chance to become.

And then you can walk off the mat with no regrets.

That's what I would want every wrestler I ever coached to understand.

Because someday the wrestling ends.

The lessons don't.
