If I Were a Wrestling Coach...

If I were a wrestling coach, I would hang this poster where my wrestlers saw it every single day.

And eventually, I would gather them around it and say:

“Look at this wall.

You're looking at wrestling.

You think we're training you to win wrestling matches.

We are.

But that's only part of it.

We're also building the person who's going to walk out of this room someday.

Because eventually, you're going to take that singlet off for the last time.

And when you do, nobody is going to care how many takedowns you scored in this room.

Life isn't going to ask how many matches you won.

But life will put you in situations where you're tired.

Where you're scared.

Where you're losing.

Where something didn't go according to plan.

Where nobody can step onto the mat and do it for you.

And when that happens...

something inside you is going to remember this room.

You'll remember getting knocked down and getting back up.

You'll remember being exhausted and continuing anyway.

You'll remember losing and coming back Monday.

You'll remember standing across from somebody who wanted exactly what you wanted...

and competing anyway.

That's why I push you.

That's why I don't let you quit when things get hard.

That's why I expect more from you than you sometimes expect from yourself.

Because we're building something in here.

Something you can't hang around your neck.

Something that won't sit in a trophy case.

Something much more valuable.

We're building your wrestling DNA.

And someday, wrestling will end.

But the discipline won't.

The toughness won't.

The courage won't.

The ability to get back up won't.

Those belong to you now.

So when you walk into this room tomorrow, don't think you're coming here just to become a better wrestler.

You're coming here to build the person you're going to be...

for the rest of your life.
