If I Were a Wrestling Coach...

If I were a wrestling coach, I would hang this poster in our wrestling room.

And one day, I’d stand in front of my team and say:

“Guys, someday you’re going to forget a lot of what I taught you.

You’ll forget some of the moves.

You’ll forget the scores.

You’ll probably forget half the things I yelled from the corner.

But I hope you never forget why I coached you.

We're going to teach you wrestling in this room.

But we're also going to teach you how to work when you're tired.

How to respond when you lose.

How to keep your word.

How to be a good teammate.

How to stand back up when life knocks you down.

Because someday, guys, you’re going to wrestle your last match.

And when that happens, my job isn't finished.

That's when we find out whether I did it right.

Not by counting your trophies.

But by looking at the husband you become.

The father you become.

The friend, teammate, employee, leader and man you become.

Twenty years from now, I probably won't remember your record.

And you probably won't remember mine.
